PITT-GREENSBURG COACHES TO TAKE POLAR PLUNGE FOR SPECIALS OLYMPICS;
HILBERT SAAC TAKES THE PLUNGE IN LAKE ERIE
12/6/11
Four Pitt-Greensburg coaches are prepared to jump into the
Allegheny River outside Heinz Field in downtown Pittsburgh this
Saturday as part of a fund-raising effort for Special Olympics.
AD and golf coach Tony Berich, women's basketball coach
Erin Eaton, baseball coach Anthony Williams, and women's
soccer coach Betsy Warren have all stepped up to take the
"Polar Plunge", and are encouraging faculty, staff and students to
donate spare change towards the effort. Any coach whose
collection of change raises at least $50 must take the plunge.

"We call it 'Freezin' for a Reason'," said Eaton. "We're
curious to know what students will pay to see us do this."
Further north, Hilbert College SAAC members raised $600
through pre-plunge donations, resulting in 11 students and
advisors taking a dip in Lake Erie at Woodlawn Beach State Park on
December 3.

“We raise nearly a million dollars in polar pledges each year
which allows our athletes to train and compete year round, at no
cost to them or their families," said Renee Snyder of the Special
Olympics. "So right here today we’re expecting to raise about
$150,000 through donations with nearly 1,000 people jumping in the
lake.”
The NCAA Division III S.A.A.C. announced a partnership with
Special Olympics at last year’s NCAA Convention in January. Each
of the ten Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference member
institution S.A.A.C.s are encouraged to support the Special
Olympics through a variety of activities whether they participate
in fundraising events, host special events to honor the Special
Olympians or become coaches within the organization.

Advisory Committee hosted "Bowl with a Buddy" on Sunday.
The event brought together nearly 60 Special Olympians and more than
60 Panther student-athletes.
The Special Olympics tournament is scheduled for next weekend.
The UPB SAAC board will be present to medals to the winners.
PITT-GREENSBURG WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PARTNERS WITH SALVATION ARMY
FOR "PROJECT BUNDLE UP"
10/26/11
Members of the Pitt-Greensburg women’s basketball team and
coaching staff recently
joined
the Greensburg Salvation Army for their annual “Project
Bundle-Up”. A program that serves needy and disabled senior
citizens and disadvantaged children, ranging from infant to teens,
“Project Bundle Up” provides those in need with winter outerwear.
Every year the Salvation Army joins forces with local merchants to
raise money to fund this project.
This past Saturday, 11 Bobcat players and coaches headed to the
Greensburg Wal*Mart to be paired up with a child whom they would
take on a personal shopping spree. The children were thrilled to
be the center of attention and spent the morning talking with the
volunteers about their families, school, and favorite sports.
After all of the winter coats, fleece jackets, snow pants, boots,
hats, gloves, and scarves were brought to check-out, everyone
headed to McDonalds for breakfast. As the morning concluded, the
vans were loaded up and the children were anxious to head back
home to show off their new purchases. |
