PITT-BRADFORD'S KUSHNER, LAKE ERIE'S BINKO NAMED CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR FOR SOFTBALL

A pair of big-hitting juniors head the 2008 AMCC Softball All-Conference Team.  Pitt-Bradford outfielder Michelle Kushner (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox) who hit .448 this season with a .750 slugging percentage, and Lake Erie first baseman Brittney Binko (Warren, OH/John F. Kennedy) with a .435 batting average and .702 slugging percentage, were named the Co-Players of the Year.  Newcomer of the Year honors went to Lake Erie freshman third baseman Katie Puda (Euclid, OH/Euclid), who also stood out at the plate (.417 BA, 40 RBI, 10 HR).  Medaille College's Robyn Ventura got the nod for Coach of the Year, a first-time honor for her, after leading the Lady Mavs to the conference's regular season title and an ECAC Upstate Region Tournament bid.

The National Fast Pitch Coaches Association also announced their all-region teams today, and the AMCC was represented in three regions.  Lake Erie placed three players in the Central region:  Shaina Vanderpool (at-large) on the first team and Katie Puda (third base) and Brinney Binko (first base) on the second team.  Pitt-Bradford saw two players make the East region team:  Michelle Kushner (outfield) on the second team and Lauryn Weaver (catcher) on the third team.  Medaille placed Amanda Baker (catcher) on the first team.

BEHREND SOFTBALL COMES BACK TO WIN AMCC TITLE AND NCAA BID; LAKE ERIE, MEDAILLE GOING TO ECAC TOURNEY

The Penn State Behrend softball team won five straight games, picking up four wins on Sunday alone to capture the AMCC Championship.  The squad rallied after losing a game on Friday in the double-elimination tournament, winning their next five games to storm back and capture their second championship in three seasons.  They defeated Frostburg St. in back-to-back games (2-0 and 9-1) to earn the title.

The Behrend Lions move on to play in their second ever NCAA championship tournament.  They are seeded #7 in the East region and will face #2 Ramapo College, the New Jersey Athletic Conference champion, on Thursday at 4pm at Ithaca College.

Meanwhile, both Medaille College and Lake Erie College received ECAC bids and will see first round action on Wednesday.  Medaille, the regular season conference champion, will be at #3 SUNY-Oneonta as the #5 seed in the Upstate Region Tournament.  Lake Erie, which finished in second place in the AMCC regular season, received a bid to the South Region Tournament also as the #5 seed and will travel to #3 seed Alvernia.  The winner will advance to a four-team, double-elimination weekend tournament in each region.

BASEBALL DOWN TO FINAL FOUR TEAMS FOR TOURNAMENT

The final pairings are finally set for the AMCC baseball tournament, to be held at Penn St. Behrend May 9-11.  Defending champion Frostburg St. earned the #2 seed and will face #3 Lake Erie College at 9:30am on Friday, while the top seeded Behrend Lions will take on #4 Pitt-Bradford at 1pm.  Lake Erie advanced by beating #6 Penn St. Altoona, 2-0 and 6-4, on Sunday, while UPB took a pair of games from #5 Pitt-Greensburg, 4-0 and 6-4.  The  winner of the championship round will also get the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

PENN ST. BEHREND MEN'S BASKETBALL EARN NATIONAL STATISTICS AWARD

Penn St. Behrend, the 2008 AMCC men's basketball champion, has been recognized by the NCAA for their outstanding defensive play.  The Behrend Lions finished the season ranked #1 in the nation among all Division III teams for their scoring defense, allowing opponents a paltry 54.6 ppg.  They also ranked 10th in scoring margin and 11th in win-loss percentage, concluding the season with a 24-5 record.
