MOUNT ALOYSIUS TEAMS UP WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND MYI
5/9/12
On Saturday April 28th the Mount Aloysius College athletic
department paired up with the Special Olympics. Along with these
athletes were 11 seventh grade students who are involved in the
Mercy Youth Initiative (MYI) that is provided through the college.
The MYI is a mentor program designed for Youth of Promise and the
Mount Aloysius students. These students are those that they believe
will benefit from learning about college, building communication and
learning social skills. Each session includes a career, mentor and
athletic event. The SAAC has taken the lead in coordination
teambuilding activities to get the kids up and moving.
Both the student-athletes and the students from the MYI listened to
Jennifer Tresp, Senior
Competition Director, discuss the purpose of
Special Olympics in addition to her journey within the organization.
Jennifer discussed the importance of communication and support among
team members. She then facilitated a group activity in which the
athletes and MYI students had to come up with a strategy to get
paper air planes across the finish line. Then, they discussed ways
in which we as an athletic department can get more involved in the
Special Olympics. After that the athletes divided up into groups in
which they provided games and skill work in basketball, soccer and
volleyball. To end the session the student-athletes and the MYI
students played a fun game of kickball.

MOUNT ALOYSIUS TENNIS TEAM CELEBRATES EARTH DAY VOLUNTEERING AT
LOCAL HISTORIC SITE
5/3/12
Mount Aloysius College
student-athletes teamed up to do horticultural and environmental
work at the Allegheny-Portage National Historical Site on Earth Day,
with six members of the men’s tennis team along with head coach Ryan
Navarro joining forces with other
members
of the campus community. The National Park Service, in
collaboration with the United Way of the Laurel Highlands, held
their first annual National Park Service Day of Caring on April 22.
This event also kicked off National Park Week.
Sophomore player Ryan Bressler said he found the community service
to be enjoyable and beneficial. "Although our part was small,
we contributed to the much larger picture," said Bressler.
"Simple community service makes the parks cleaner and creates a much
more picturesque atmosphere. It is surprising how much trash and
weeds a group of volunteers can collect in a short amount of time.”
