PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

PENN STATE BEHREND SELECTED TO CLAIM
FIFTH CONFERENCE TITLE

With a runner-up finish in 2011, the AMCC baseball coaches believe Penn State Behrend will be the team to beat for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball title in 2012.  The Lions are coming off a 28-13 season that saw them finish second to Penn State Altoona in the regular season standings and in the league tournament.  La Roche College was picked in the #2 spot, while Penn St. Altoona, the 2011 champion, was voted to finish third.

The Preseason Player of the Year designation goes to Mount Aloysius senior catcher/DH Matt Cornetti (Nanty Glo, PA/Central Cambria HS).  Cornetti received numerous awards in 2011, including being named first team All-AMCC, third team All-Mid Atlantic Region, and a D3baseball.com pre-season All-American.  He posted a team leading .420 batting average with 14 doubles, 3 homeruns, and 14 stolen bases.  Cornetti ranked 17th in NCAA Div. III in on-base percentage and 52nd in batting average.

The Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors were shared by Behrend's junior righthander Jay Condit (Cranberry, PS/Seneca Valley HS) and La Roche sophomore southpaw Cole Lentz (Freedom, PA/Freedom HS) Condit is a 2012 Collegiate Baseball Player to Watch.  He led the AMCC in saves last season with 5, ranked fourth for appearances and sixth in wins. In 13 games pitched, Condit logged 36.1 innings and posted a  5-0 win lost record and a 1.49 ERA.  A second team all-conference selection, Lentz racked up 53 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched as a rookie, posting a 3.21 ERA.

The AMCC kicks off conference play on Saturday, March 24, and the championship will be May 10-12 at the site of the top seed.  The winner of the tournament will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
