La Roche College is expected to successfully defend its Allegheny
Mountain Collegiate Conference title, according to
the 2003 AMCC pre-season coaches’ poll. The Lady
Redhawks received four of seven first place votes, followed
closely by Penn State Altoona with three votes to finish first.
Pitt-Bradford was a solid pick for the #3 spot.
There was no consensus on a Preseason Player of the Year, but the
Lady Redhawks would look to have the advantage on the field with
three different players nominated for the honor: 2002 All-AMCC
first team first baseman Casey Byerly (McGuffy HS/ Washington,
PA), who batted .483 with 44 RBI and a .993 fielding percentage;
fellow all-star outfielder Kristy Phister; and 2002 Newcomer
of the Year Nikki Kress. Penn State Altoona junior
pitcher Amanda Rourke (Tussey Mountain HS/Saxton, PA) was the
clear choice for Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
